Abstract: This study examined whether children of English-speaking parents and children of non-English-speaking parents would show similar abilities on three measures of foreign language listening comprehension. Children of English-speaking parents were distinguished from children of non-English-speaking parents based on their performance on a test of receptive and productive vocabulary. Children of non-English-speaking parents were distinguished from children of English-speaking parents based on their performance on a test of listening comprehension. A significant positive correlation was found between the receptive vocabulary and the foreign language listening comprehension for children of English-speaking parents but not for children of non-English-speaking parents. No significant correlations were found between the productive vocabulary and the foreign language listening comprehension for children of English-speaking parents or non-English-speaking parents. A significant positive correlation was found between receptive and productive vocabulary and the foreign language listening comprehension for children of English-speaking parents. The relationships for children of non-English-speaking parents were not significant. Language testing and parent-child correlations are frequently used as predictors of dyslexia. These relationships are often used to help identify children with language disorders.
